THE WORLD AS A STAGE
Tate Modern, London
(Curated by Jessica Morgan and Catherine Wood)

This exhibition was a group show of artists whose work investigates ideas of ‘theatre’, staging and performance. The Tate commissioned us to work on the publication, signage, marketing material and printed matter.

We spent an afternoon in Cecil Court rummaging through drawers of David Drummond's beautiful collection of printed theatre ephemera from 1900s to the present day. We really enjoyed the simplicity of these objects – the materials, the colours, the typefaces, the mini-adverts in the back, the portraits of the stars in each show. We wanted our designs to feel different to these existing theatre programmes, but with that language. It seemed essential that they contained the same sort of content and language. In the publication we designed an essay as 'acts of a play', and created a portrait for each of the artists – in some way personalising each of them. We created ‘adverts’ for each of the artists too – several of whom had performances, events and off-site installations - these appeared in the publication and then as billboards in the café.
