Seriously, Now
Perhaps too small a selection to claim a trend, but several new magazines I’ve received recently share a single-minded seriousness which is worth noting. More journals than magazines, The Happy Hypocrite, Dispatches and Bedeutung have mixed subject matter and different approaches to design.
The star, though, is The Happy Hypocrite. It has the best name (from a short story by Max Beerbohm) and is most designed, with APFEL in charge of the visuals.
I mean designed in the truest sense, as in discreetly given its own identity. This oversized A5 journal is plain and simple with neat touches including the embossed theme on the cover, above, functional but characterful fonts, below, and a good use of space across the pages to create pace.
Spare, but effective, it also finds space for found imagery, below. It’s published from London by publishers Bookworks.
